Chapter 16

The Vampire Queen

Michael found it difficult to think. Something had happened to his memory. There was somewhere he should be, but he couldn’t recall. It lingered tantalizingly on the edge of his mind and seemed to move every time he got close to remembering.

He opened his eyes. To his surprise, they had been shut. Slanting rays of sun that shown between loosely fitted shutters provided a dim illumination. He moved restively.

A soft hand caressed his forehead, and a hypnotic and very feminine voice said, “There. There. Don’t trouble yourself, my dear. You’re safe and happy here with me. There’s no need for your armor now. The conflict is over. Remove it and share pleasure with me. I want to feel your flesh beneath my lips.”

Michael made a slight movement with his hand, but memory kicked in. There was no way he could remove his armor if the nanites sensed a threat. The armor and his nanite swarm together composed a significant artificial intelligence, one that could not be co-opted or corrupted. He remembered more.

Sophie could control her nanite swarm, but he had never had conscious control over his. They just seemed to do what was best for him, despite his intentions otherwise. This was, he supposed, related to his old Granny’s reputation as a hedge witch. She had been able to influence things and outcomes in ways that made most people uneasy and left them shaking their heads. He had mentioned to Sophie that he’d inherited his Granny’s ability.

That thought led to another. Sophie! He’d forgotten about her. How had that happened? Oh. There was a...there was a...another woman who wanted him. He thought she was important, but how? He remembered he loved Sophie and that she was carrying his child. How could anyone be more important to him than his life-love? He wiped his hand over his eyes, then shifted restlessly.

He moved again, searching through the dimly lit area for the one who had spoken. There she was! He looked closely at a figure that was incredibly horrifying. The features were sharp and almost skeletal. The hair was dry and brittle, trailing in lank clumps. The flesh was pallid and looked dry.
